We're taking a day trip to Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary — a place steeped in history and legend. Established in 1896 as Tennessee's first maximum-security prison, Brushy Mountain operated for over a century before closing its doors in 2009 as the oldest operating prison in the state. For much of its history, inmates worked in the on-site coal mine, and the prison earned a fearsome reputation as the last stop for the state's most notorious criminals.

Among its infamous residents: 

• James Earl Ray, who attempted a daring escape and was stabbed in the process

• Byron "Low Tax" Looper

• Paul Dennis Reid, the "Fast Food Killer"  

• and many more!

Today, Brushy Mountain has been transformed into a fascinating tourist destination, offering guided tours and dining at The Warden's Table restaurant. It's located northwest of Knoxville, just outside Frozen Head State Park — a beautiful drive through the Tennessee mountains.

Trip Details:
🚌 Bus departs from our East Campus at 8:00 AM and returns approximately 6:00 PM
🛣️ Drive is roughly 2½ hours each way

💵 Cost: $100 per person
